Hub3 and VM App

I came across the VM App and installed it. Tried to connect to my router and was told I can't because the app is only compatible with the Hub 3. It thoughtfully gave me a link to order a 'free' router. I went through the process to order a new router and now get a message telling me I've upgraded and am in a new 12 month contract. Is this correct? I was out of contract and for the sake of an app which I will probably eventually uninstall due to the high number of negative reviews I'm now stuck in a new contract? If so then please cancel my order.
