Direct debit not taken

I have ALWAYS paid my VM bill by DD. Moved house in August (took VM over a month to install services, WHAT a palaver that was!) got a bill today through post (why? I always had it emailed before) telling me i hadn't paid last bill and now got £7.50 surcharge. No other bill received, nor DD payment taken and bank not advised me of or charged for failed DD (which shouldn't have happened as bank account in credit). So what's going on? Tried ringing, can't get thru. Am happy to pay on QuickPay but want to know why no ebill recd or DD taken, as was procedure before moving.
