Just to let you know the problem has been resolved. A few points to note.
I called tech support and they told me to use another browser.
I did that and had to register again and it worked fine with no problems.
When I first registered I used google chrome and it did not appear to register correctly. If you try log on using chrome it will not work and you receive a message you have 5 attempts.
Virgin are aware of the problem with google chrome but they are a broadband provider.
Surely this has to be resolved as Virgin must have lots of customers who use google chrome.
Is this a on going issue or can you log into virgin media using google chrome. ? Would be interesting to find out

Another point when you receive email from virgin it says register you account straight away before your broadband becomes active. Which I did using google chrome but unless this issue is resolved you need to let customers know do not use google chrome.
