Can someone from Virgin Media help please. Price hike by 210% ??? is it for real?

Tuning in

I signed up with Virgin Media March 2022 for 18 months contract for cable broadband/lineline/SIM card only. Initially I only wanted the cable broadband but the salesman urged and offered a good deal for landline phone plus simcard only. The service is fine, but they increased the priced a little bit after a few months, the reason given was the inflation. It was acceptable to me.

Today I made a contact with Virgin Media regarding my contract which is expiring next month. The agent told me that they want to increase the cable broadband and the land line by 210%, 200 times over the inflation rate, they want me to negotiate with O2 separately. Which no doubt would go up even more.

Are broadband companies allowed to jack up the price exceeding the inflation rate. Would 210% be the figure for the broadband price increase in general this year?  what is going on? If someone from Virgin sees this posting. Please explain.

Your 18 month minimum term contact is coming to an end, if you do nothing then any discounts will be removed and yes, your price will increase dramatically, (210% does seem a bit excessive, would you have any objection to posting what you are paying now and what they want next month?)

Anyhow, yes they can charge you whatever they want, but once your minimum term ends, you are quite free to give them 30 day’s notice and cancel - which is probably what you should do. But first, do your homework and look at what alternatives are available to you, armed with that, you can call VM and negotiate some package which is acceptable, or not, and you cancel and sign up with neither company.

What exactly is it you want, no more, no less? Not interested in an O2 SIM? Then reject any offers of a ‘Volt’ deal, no matter how attractive they make it seem, don’t use a landline? Other suppliers don’t offer one, or if they do it’s a paid add on, but they don’t push it.

Oh, and lastly, albeit 18 months too late;

I only wanted the cable broadband but the salesman urged and offered a good deal for landline phone plus simcard only.”

Always, always bear in mind that the salesman’s main objective is to get the maximum amount of money they can get from you as they can, because it’s how they make their money, all fair enough, but never, even think they are looking out for you, they’re not!

Hi Vinegar, thanks for your advice. I have been in touch with Virgin. They agreed to increase overall package (landline/broadband/O2) to 50% after some negotiations, It is around £50. It is much more reasonable and I am happy to continue.

Thank you, I seemed to be able to reach out and negotiated a price. Thank you.

Good job, although you also need to be aware that the price will increase during this new contract by RPI+3.9% from April 1st 2024 with the increase on the undiscounted price as far as I am aware. 🔎
