intermittent landline dial tone

ditto
On our wavelength

I have had an intermittent dial tone on my landline for several weeks. My voicemail box is empty so the tone is not alerting me to unanswered voicemails. About 2 weeks ago I reported this fault to 150 and was told that the problem was general, not just my phone and that engineers were working an the problem which should be rectified in a couple of days. The problem is still ongoing. I have tried obvious things like unplugging the phone for a while and sending myself a message and then deleting it. Neither made any difference.  In every other respect the phone works. Can anyone help?

Hey @ditto,

Sorry to hear you have been having this issue with your Landline, did the agent you spoke to provide a specific date as then when the issue should be fixed? Alternatively what we would advise is to try placing a different handset in the connection and see if this is still causing the same issue. This allows us to see if its an issue with the line or the phone itself.

Hello Jo

Thanks for replying. I spoke to an agent who was unsure what was causing the problem. She transferred me to what she described as a specialist in the engineers department. The guy I spoke to there said it was a known problem, that it was general and not just my line and should be fixed in 2 or three days. He did not specify a date. I have just plugged in an old spare handset and the dialing tone is exactly the same so it cannot be faulty equipment at my end. The fault must be on the line. Otherwise the line works fine but it is annoying that whenever I pick up I have to check voicemails in case the tone is genuinely indicating that I have messages. I would like this fixed before the new year when Virgin are meant to be transferring my line to VOIP which could possibly add issues to an existing problem.  So could this be investigated further?

Same problem. Phone line switched over to VOIP around one month ago. I always get an intermittent dial tone even though no messages are waiting for me. The phone service and voicemail are working fine. When are you going to fix this at your end? Don't even think about suggesting I change the phone etc!!

Hi @nigelss

Welcome to our Community Forums and thanks for your post.

I am sorry to hear you are getting an intermittent dial tone.

As your line connects via the hub, have you tried rebooting the router to see if this helps?

I have not done anything, but since you posted your reply the problem has gone away and the dial tone is back to normal. You must have magic powers!

Thanks for the update @nigelss and I'm pleased to hear that this has since been resolved.

Do feel free to come back to us, if the issues re-emerges

Thanks,
