Any tips on buying a Virgin Media compatible handset?
Go to Answer
You can use any handset you use on a normal BT phone line. If you have one of the new style Landlines that uses the socket on your hub you will need an RJ11 plug to BT socket converter to plug it in.

I bought a cheap handset from Amazon and there is no ring tone. So it sounds like this is because it was a cheap handset rather than there being a "Virgin Media" approved handset?
No dial tone faults are quite common, so it may not be the phone. If you can try it on a neighbours line that you know is working you can eliminate the handset as the issue.
If it's an old handset it needs a ring capacitor. You can either buy an RJ11 to BT adapter with a ring capacitor (costs £4 on eBay) or get a modern hamdset.
