VOIP - Ultimate Volt - Hub 5

Tuning in

We have recently gone over to VM fibre with the Ultimate Volt 1 gig package.

As we have had problems with "no number" calls and were considering a change anyhow to access VOIP calls we purchased a new Gigaset N300 with C530 IP handsets. We expected these would enable us to set up internet calls (VOIP). Disappointing to find that VOIP calls are not available to us even though we have the latest Hub 5; it seems from reading on this forum that Hub 3 would enable us to have this function.

Is this correct? Surely we shouldn't have to downgrade to take advantage of current technology?

Hi @chelmoo thanks for your post, although I'm sorry to hear of your concerns raised here.

Can you confirm what's happening when people try to make calls to you, or you try and make calls?

Do you have a dial tone at all and is your landline connected to the Hub 5 via the adapter?

Many thanks

VM doesn't offer VOIP services (if that is what you are referring to). You would have to port your number to a VOIP provider to be able to use VOIP services.

At a quick glance, the Siemens equipment seems to be a hybrid system (POTS and VOIP). If you plug it into the Hub 5 as a conventional landline, does the 'no number' calls issue still persist on the Siemens system or is it confined just to your previous BT phone?

Virgin are implementing 21CV. It does use IP techniques for transmission, but is a LOCAL service (ie. The calls are still routed to Virgins local PSTN exchange at the cable headend) it does not use the internet.

I have heard of some issues with Caller Display not working on some migrated lines. It may just be a switching issue at the exchange.

I think chelmoo is referring to this issue with a particular combo of Hub 5 + BT phone

Hi there Tom, thanks for your reply.

Yes we have a dial tone, incoming and outgoing calls ok and landline is connected yo the hub via the adapter installed by the VM engineer. We hadn't expected this new phone set up to work at all given previous posts on this forum.

Our problem is we would like to make VoIP calls and had bought this phone system for that reason.

It would seem from Goslow's reply that we can't via VM?

Thanks Goslow,

Thankfully the new Gigaset is not showing any missed "no number" calls.

How do we find a VoIP provider?

Yes, that is correct, but our main concern now is the lack of VoIP provision. Still, we will either have to wait or as Goslow advises, find another VoIP provider. Not what we had expected.

Not something I have any experience of, I'm afraid, so can't offer any suggestions on that. Sorry.

Hello chelmoo,

Can I please ask for a few days to see what I can do to help here,

I can go away and ask our 21Cv Project Team for advice, and get back to you on here.
