We converted to VOIP some time ago.
There was downtime today, so we couldn’t check whether the fault was with VM or us.
Is there a freephone number which can be used on a mobile phone (not Virgin)?

Try the automated service status number 0800 561 0061 to check for any faults in your area.
0800 should always be free. If your mobile no. is linked to your VM account as a contact number the VM system should recognise who you are when calling.

VM Customer Support are on 150 or 0345 454 1111 from a non-VM phone.

Re the app, when the internet goes down, you can’t connect with anything. The telephone number will be useful if this happens again.
I have spoken to VM and a fix is being worked on.
