Joined VM at the end of November, my contract with Plusnet finished on 5th December. Indicated that I wanted to keep my old number, but it is still not working. Please help.

Sorry to hear that you're having some issues when porting a number over to us. A number port can only be completed when the line/account is active with the previous supplier, and from your post I don't think that is the case. What I will do is pop you over a private message to confirm some details with you and take a look into this.
There seems to be quite a few of us who are having the same problem - maybe Virgin need to provide specific guidance on what not to do/what to do when moving to them and wanting to keep a landline number, rather than finding out too late that the transfer has not happened.
