Porting old phone number across.

I have recently re joined Virgin and want to port our old number. I have tried numerous times via phoning and chat message but get passed around to “The right team” only to get cut off.
we’ve been given a temp number since sign up and already receiving rogue and nuisance calls within 6 hours of being ex directory!

Re: Porting old phone number across.

Well after sitting in a queue for a nearly an hour I eventually spoke to someone. They said they can’t port our old number but can give us a new one which will be changed in 24-48hrs.

That was a week ago and still waiting. ☹️

Re: Porting old phone number across.

Hi there @K2OL

Thanks for your post - I am sorry to hear about any delay with your number change request.

Have we advised as to why we're unable to port your number from your old provider? Did you request this at the point of sale and have we asked your old provider for the number? As can only do a number port if your telephone number is still active with your old provider.

Is there a reason that if we cannot do the number port you are requesting another number?

Cheers

Re: Porting old phone number across.

To cut a long story short. We left Virgin In April and were supposed to be with Sky.
sky couldn’t connect us until Mid June so we came back to Virgin.
wanted our old number back which was with Sky /Openreach we presume. Told them this when we signed up.  Told we’d have a temp number initially whilst it ported.
The temp number hasn’t changed to our old one.
phoned up and told we couldn’t have our old number back as the team that do it aren’t working due to Covid 19.
Said she would arrange a new number and still waiting for that one.
phoned again this morning and she has put a further request in for a new number. Still getting several random calls a day so have disconnected the phone.

Re: Porting old phone number across.

Thanks for popping back with that information - where was your landline between April and your new installation? Was it active anywhere or was it fully disconnected by us when you initially left?

What are the calls you are getting @K2OL? Have you registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) to stop some unsolicited calls?

Re: Porting old phone number across.

We left Virgin has our monthly price doubled at the end of our contract.
Sky / Openreach then took it but couldn’t reconnect us until June. I guess it’s still with Openreach at the moment although we’ve since cancelled our contract with them.
we should be ex directory. The number we’ve been given is one digit out from the local housing company, it’s a very easy generic number to kid dial. All the calls have been random people not necessarily Scam but not necessary.

Re: Porting old phone number across.

So was your number ever active with Sky?

They can only take your number from us if it was still active with us. If your account with us fully closed in April then another provider would not have been able to take your number from us.

Did your number always belong to us or did you bring it with you to us originally? The reason we ask is if it belonged to another provider, once it is disconnected, it returns to the owner of the number. If it belongs to us, it should still be on our system - it is possible to see if you can have this number reconnected.

Ex-directory just means that your number is not available via directory inquiries or the Phone book.

Re: Porting old phone number across.

if you have cancelled the account with the old number the number will be lost.

The requirements for porting say
1) Number must be active with another provider
2) the other provider must not have a cancelation on the number

Re: Porting old phone number across.

It was never active with Sky as Open reach wouldn’t reconnect us due to Covid 19.
we bought it from Vodafone 12 months ago to Virgin. It was originally a Sky number about 7 years ago.
if we can’t have the old number we are happy to have a new one that is not a temp number, been used by others, and so close to local housing company.
