Porting landline from Sky, but Sky no longer "own" the number

I've recently left Sky and have joined Virgin Media. For various reasons my landline number didn't port across when I left Sky. I've spoken to Virgin Media who said I need to speak to Sky to request for the number to be ported across. However, I've spoken to Sky and they say they've released the number to OpenReach as my old account has been closed and that they no longer "own" the number. I've then spoken to OpenReach who have said that they can't help but that Virgin Media should be able to facilitate and manage this process. So I'm at a bit of a loss as I've now gone full circle. Can you help please?
