Phone switchover to 21CV

I've just had an email (not had a letter) telling me my phone will be switched to 21CV at the end of March and I need a technician visit as I have an old (V2 I think) router,

1. Can someone arrange for a letter to be sent to me please?

2. I use the Virgin router simply as a modem and have my own router equipment. Will this still be possible with the new router that Virgin will be fitting?

Hello endure.

Thank you your post regarding the 21CV switchover.

The new hub that will be supplied and fitted will still be able to be used in Modem Mode along side your existing router.

The only difference will be the 2 extra ports at the back for a Telephone connection.

The process of contacting you is Letter/email - call- reminder letter/email.

The letters contain the same information as the email.

Hope that answers your question.

I received the same email this morning...

My current broadband router sits in another room from the landline phone as I am hard wired into my desktop.

I rarely make outgoing calls so being able to take incoming and make 999 calls is ok by me, I usually just use my mobile for outgoing.

Can you answer these questions please?

a. Does the router for the new phone line replace my current broadband router or is it a separate piece of kit?

b. Can I just leave it as is and not have an outgoing call facility?

Hello Wulliekane,

Thank you as well for your post and questions.

a. Does the router for the new phone line replace my current broadband router or is it a separate piece of kit?

The only hubs we are replacing are the Superhub2ac. Any hubs after that are capable of 21CV.

b. Can I just leave it as is and not have an outgoing call facility?

We do need to upgrade the line to Fibre. You can still make outgoing calls if you wish. Also incoming calls can be received.

In a nutshell the only thing that changes is the phone plugs into the hub as opposed to the current socket.

Assuming your router is a VM hub of some kind, you need a VM Hub 3 or above with a telephone socket on the back in order to use the new 21CV service.

You plug a phone (via an adapter supplied by VM) into the TEL1 socket on the hub, as below, in order to make/receive calls.

If your hub and phone are in different locations, VM will modify your home phone wiring to link the phone socket on the hub to your existing extension sockets which keeps all equipment in its existing location(s). They should do this free of charge as part of the switchover process.

Another alternative is to buy some cordless phones. Plug the cordless base station into the VM hub and use cordless satellite handsets around the home where required.

Thanks to Gareth_L and Goslow for the swift answers.

So If I have this right..

I have the Superhub2ac which is needing replaced regardless.

I currently use a cordless phone that sits on a hub plugged into the existing socket.

So I can just put the phone base in the same room as a I currently have my existing router and there's no need to change wiring etc?

Also if this is the case and it's a simple enough procedure can the new hub just be sent out/dropped off without the need for a technician to visit?

Hello Wulliekane.

That would be spot on regarding the handsets location.

Sadly we do physically need to swap and set up the new Hub for you.

if there are any issues then we have the Technician onsite to fix it.

If it was a Hub3 then it can be done remotely.

Have you been given a date yet for the switchover.

I only got the email today so I haven't arranged anything, but 11th February is the date.

I also need to plan it around home/office working and my Wife's shifts to make sure someone is in.
