Phone number scam

  • My son recently thought he was phoning HMRC but in fact dialled a premium number unknowingly, my telephone bill has been extortionately charged , is there any way I can get a refund?

Re: Phone number scam

Have a look at the Phone-paid Services Authority website which regulates this.

Sounds like your son may have used an 'Information, Connection and Signposting Service' (see below for explanation)

There is also a checker here

https://psauthority.org.uk/for-consumers/service-checker

where you can look up premium rate numbers and see who owns/runs them

Re: Phone number scam

Thanks very much for the info , I have already logged with the phone paid services authority , my son had used google to find the number for HMRC , the telephone number that came up was using HMRC logos etc but as we now know was obviously a scam , I’m not sure whether I would be entitled to a refund but would like to let other members know please always go to the correct web sites when looking for phone numbers.

Re: Phone number scam

always make sure you get the correct contact info and never trust anyone that contacts you.

As he found and called the number it may be unlikely VM will be able to do anything about a refund
