Phone line completely dead again

For the second time in the last year our land line is completely dead. The last time we had a merry go round  with Virgin of "We have fixed your line", us "No you haven't" this went on for 8 days.

This time Virgin operator agreed that the line is no longer commissioned. They said that they will transfer me to the technical dept. I then held on without an answer for 40 minutes. Why does Virgin not have a simple process for reporting and acting on faults.

We are ditching the whole Virgin package having given them the 30 day notice yesterday. But need the landline to work in the meantime. Also do not want to lose our phone number.
