Phantom calls

Hi just wondering if anybody else has had the same issue as us. For the past 2 months our bill has increased for chargeable calls to strange numbers in the early hours to numbers like

0123 000 0000

numbers that begin with our area code (0114) that when contacted from a mobile do not connect

The other thing is we do not have any thing plugged into our landline as we both use our mobiles.

I spoke to Virgin media who are going to send an engineer to check for a cross connection but I am just wondering if it has happened to anybody and if they have any advice?
