Old BT line.

Hi. I am currently a VM customer and always have been. When I first bought my current house, I rented it out for a while. These tenants had BT installed. When I moved in, I had VM put in. The old BT cable was still in situe until I recently had some building work done. The cable is now detached from the house and left loose in my front garden dangling from the telegraph pole. I spoke to BT today about getting it removed but they said because the account with them is now closed, it is up to my new provider (VM) to disconnect and dispose of the cable. Does this sound right and will it cost me. If so it can stay there.

Hi dogmeat50 👋

Thanks for posting, and a warm welcome back to the Community Forums.

I'm sorry to hear about the detached cabling in your front garden. Unfortunately, as these are owned by Openreach, and the vast majority of our cabling is underground, we would not be able to remove these telegraph pole cables.

Whilst you are no longer a customer with BT, or connected to the Openreach network, this would remain their responsibility. We wouldn't be able to advise on any charges, as this would be at their discretion, however, as the cabling is detached and loose, they may identify this as a health and safety issue and remove it free of charge - but you would need to speak with them directly to confirm this.

Thanks,

Reece - Forum Team

It’s definitely BT’s responsibility to get fixed. Best thing to do is coil up the cable and tape to the street pole. It’s then off your premises and not your responsibility.
