No dial tone

Had crackling for weeks then intermittent no dial tone. Booked engineer but fault rectified itself. Back to no dial tone again now. No fault in area. Tried new phone plugged into master port but still no tone.

Thanks for posting and welcome to the community. Sorry to hear of the phone line issue. I have ran a fault diagnostic for you; 

 

Do you have any other pieces of equipment connected to your phone socket? This may include:

• Other telephones 
• Personal Computers 
• Faxes 
• Modems 
• Satellite TV digiboxes 
• Micro-filters 
• ADSL modem or router 

 

How many pieces of equipment do you have connected, is it more or less than 3?

There is a single phone plugged into the master socket of the main line and nothing else connected.

There are a few troubleshooting checks I will need you to perform to see if they are successful in resolving the issue. Can you:

 

• Check the phone is seated in the base unit correctly & powered ON. 
• Remove all other equipment connected to telephone sockets. 
• Unplug the phone and check another phone directly into the main socket ensuring this is a VM socket and not one with a BT or Sky logo. If no alternative handset is available then ensure the original phone is plugged into the main socket with no other pieces of equipment being plugged in.

Thanks John. The phone is a brand new one purchased specifically to test the line. It is plugged in directly to the Cable Wireless socket and is seated correctly. No other devices are connected.

Is there any way to post photos of the repair? The engineer was booked for 4pm but had already completed the repair before we arrived home at 3:40 Yes the phone is working but the cable and splice are visible with the orange splice box barely below the surface of the soil and the rest of the cable either sitting on top of the soil or in the air. I don’t like to complain but the standard of the cable laying leaves much to be desired. 
I would like to thank John for his assistance in getting an engineer to repair the cable but no idea how long the repair will last 😞
