Loss of caller ID

My home phone stopped working. VM sent out an engineer who said BT had changed from digital to pulse (or vica versa) and that my burglar alarm was the issue and disconnected the alarm, no caller id).  The alarm engineer came put in some device into his device, charged us £100 reconnected the alarm to the telephone (its a monitored system) he left, still no caller id.  Phoned VM, engineer said he would try something but not sure it would work, still no id. Phoned VM today, got caught in a loop with timed hang ups.

Can anyone help?
