Changing from BT to TalkTalk. Virgin said I could keep my original phone number. I have a different number on my billing account?

Forgive me, but can you please confirm how this involves Virgin Media, as this appears to be a switch between two rival companies..

Can you possibly advise me if the phone line is currently active with your previous provider?
It would also be helpful to know who the previous provider is too
