Landline telephone completely dead

I have two landline phones, one in the lounge and one in the bedroom. Neither of these phones are working.  The line is completely dead, cannot dial out or receive calls.  Any suggestions please.(checked status and Virgin state no problems in the area.).

Are the phones plugged into an extension or master telephone socket? Also, how many pieces of equipment are connected to the phone lines?

Thanks for your reply.  I checked the phone this morning and they seem to be back in working order.  I presume it must have been a temporary fault somewhere
