Landline problems, need help

I'm posting on behalf of my  mum who is a virgin media customer.  We became aware her landline was down 29/12 and spoke to Virgin who assured her the line was fine and it was a problem with her handset.  She bought a new handset and my sister helped her set this up yesterday and it still does not work.  Mum is unable to call virgin as she lives in an area with poor mobile signal, in fact they hung up on her when she tried.  I therefore tried calling on her behalf only to be told nothing could be done as I was not calling from the property, completely failing to understand that this is impossible.  I then tried to raise a complaint through live chat with no response for 45 minutes! I need this resolved, please tell me how
