Landline not ringing with new Fibre optic adaptor but we have a dialing tone.

I have connected our landline to our modem with the adaptor that was sent to us. We were not told to  it but our line just went dead. We have a dialing tone and incoming calls our received by our answerphone but the phone is not ringing. It is quite an old handset could that be the problem ?

Please could you try a new headset if possible, with the new VOIP line some handsets may not be compatible.

We tried another phone, and that has solved the problem.
