Most modern cordless phone systems allow you full control of the answering machine functions from a remote satellite handset, without having to be standing next to the base station.
It might be necessary to enable some extra features on the cordless system (which might be off by default) such as missed call notification or message waiting notification (which can be a beeping sound or a notification light or icon on the display screen of the phone)
