Are you using the VM-supplied adapter (RJ11 plug to BT socket) to connect your phone or your own lead (RJ11 plug to RJ11 plug) to do away with the adapter?
Is your phone set to 'tone' dialling and not 'pulse' (either a switch on the phone case or within menu settings)? Setting might not be present at all for a new phone.
Have you tried with a different handset?
