I’ve been monitoring my landline calls. Only had 3 calls to this all year so seems to be a waste of money to continue paying for a landline not being used.
Also there’s the changeover to VOIP which will mean landline will be in spare bedroom where modem is which isn’t convenient. What I would like confirmed is if I ask Virgin to discontinue my landline totally would this affect my broadband in any way? I wouldn’t have thought so but just want to double check.

You can have VM broadband without a VM phone line. If you remove the phone though, your package price will change (most probably going up) as VM discounts bundles of services which is why customers often take a landline, which they never use, as part of a package.
If you would become a broadband-only customer after removing the phone, you should also look at offers from other providers (assuming speed considerations are not a key issue for you) as you will get new customer pricing elsewhere. Finding out some alternative prices will also give you and idea whether VM's price minus phone is competitive or not.
If you want to still use the phone after VM's switchover, VM should modify you home phone wiring for you free of charge to link your existing extension sockets to the phone connection from the VM hub.
