I originally made a long post that for some reason did not save so to save what is left of my sanity i will try to keep this as short as possible.
been having problems with lag spikes on ps4 every night from december to now. had been playing online for 10 years with no problems before this
it is wired to the SH3 in router mode and was fine playing black ops 4 until around august i would start to get the odd days of lag spikes. modern warfare came out and was working fine until december which has been lag spikes to this day and friends also with virgin and other ISPs never have this problem.
i have tried various things like dmz, port forwarding and changed the dns to google but no joy there so just set it to default.
so last week i called virgin broadband and they said it is not my hub it is my device and can only put me through to Gadget Rescue if i want it 'fixed'. feeling pressured by the guy on the phone and desperate for a smooth online game i haven't had for a few months i reluctantly agree. (as if 65 a month wasn't enough for this i now have to pay the 20 sign up and an extra 5 a month i can't really afford)
the technician takes remote access of my laptop and logs into the hub. he disables smart wifi, enables dmz and port forwarding at the same time but doesn't do the udp ports as he was getting errors for 3478-3479 being already set to tcp and says the udp ports are enabled by default which made me skeptical of him knowing what he's doing. he tells me to start a game up so i have a blast on modern warfare and was a pretty consistent 30ms where before was bouncing from 50-60ms without spikes at the very least but this was day time.
so i tested over the weekend and at nights through the week but the ping is back in the 60s and still getting spikes and while i got slapped with gadget rescue charges i called them back. this new technician resets the hub and enables dmz and does the port forwarding correctly as far as i'm aware but the ping is no different and now spiking in the afternoon and even higher than before. he tries forwarding ports for PC modern warfare which i called him out on and the ping is 100 and scraping 300. he tells me to do the google dns then switch ethernet port on the hub and then switch wireless and all solutions didnt work. he changed things at his end while all this were going on and i gave up at the end of all this
i ended up resetting the hub and retried different methods but i am not sure of what he did on his end and now my connection is worse than it is ever been
so anyway i came here for advice and solutions before i call complaints department and change ISP with slow downloads as my contract is running out so now is the time to make change but maybe i can enjoy online gaming again. THANKS in advance
Once it's been running for a few hours, post a link to the graph here.
Probably also worth getting the modem status (upstream, downstream and network log) and posting them too. If you're posting images, be careful to obscure your MAC address. I think if you paste the text directly this is done for you.
Looking at your graph, when the Internet is being used, you seem to be getting lots of ping latency. This is the same as I've been seeing.
Interestingly, your modem has also done a software upgrade recently. My problems started a month or so ago when my previous hub upgraded. I was sent a new hub which worked fine for 3 weeks or so, then started going wrong in the same way at the exact moment after it rebooted to apply a software upgrade.
Hope you get it sorted. Probably best to leave this thread for someone from VM to respond, they seem to respond to 'older' threads first, so if a thread keeps getting replies it gets pushed down the list.
