SYNC Timing Synchronization failure while in vr

LiamRC
On our wavelength

to keep this long story short;

I have attempted to use my VR headset and play online vr games. Every time I go into any online vr game (certain ones will allow you to start in desktop, others will be in vr only), I get a SYNC Timing synchronization failure within 3 minutes of loading into the game.

Before I am asked if I have attempted some of these, I will list what I have already tried below;

change router to modem mode and use a different router - this did not help, in fact this made the issue occur more on normal online games like CSGO, COD:MW2 and Destiny 2

reconnect co-axle to wall and router - attempted this a few times to no positive result.

reset/reboot router - I have done this a few times throughout the process, this did not fix the issue.

turn off 5Ghz - attempted and did not help, same with turning off 2.4Ghz

connect directly to the router - attempted this is both router and modem mode.

Is this a recurring issueOnly in vr games specifically, this does not normally happen in most of my other games, but this does affect my work.

If you are wondering which router I am using, I am using the hub 5.

If anyone has any ideas on why this happens, it would be nice to know.

I've been having exactly the same issue!

Full details in this thread: https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Networking-and-WiFi/Hub-5-crashes-from-RTSP-stream/m-p/5307855/...

But in short:

It's an issue with the Application Level Gateway (ALG) in Hub 5 firmware LG-RDK_4.6.24-2206.7

When you're in a VRChat world with an RTSP stream in the background for music, the ALG crashes and kernel panic's the router

The crash can also be replicated with a simple Linux command

echo "SETUP A" | nc portquiz.net 554

There will be no proper fix until Virgin's engineers patch and deploy a new firmware version. But there are 2 short-term fixes:

Block 445 Outbound:

In your router admin page: Advanced Settings > Security > IP and Port filtering > Create a new rule
The rule should then be set to:

Source address: All, Destination address: All, Protocol: TCP, Source port: All, Destination port: 554, Enabled (checked)

This will simply stop any RTSP streams from being established. In VRChat specifically you will lose world music, but everything else should keep working.

VPN:

Another option is to just use a VPN so the router can't see the RTSP traffic at all, so the ALG is never triggered. For normal streams any VPN type would be fine, but for VRChat you'll probably need something with minimal overhead like the Wireguard protocol.

Hopefully this helps :)!

Can you post the power levels and the full network log please.

Also setup a BQM to record and monitor the circuit.   www.thinkbroadband.com/ping

Once done post the link to the shared live graph.

Hey Adduxi,

Sorry for the late reply, I was trying to get a bit of a log before I would post it. I have found out that it happens more when there is live streamed music inside a game (a good example would be watching a stream in vr)

What VR headset are you using? I've noticed when using external tracking base stations/lighthouses, that they can cause so much 2.4 GHz interference that wifi can completely cut out across the house. Of course, this wouldn't explain the troubleshooting steps you've tried not working but I wonder if that could be causing issues somehow.

LiamRC
On our wavelength

I am using a 2018 HTC Vive.

I originally thought it might be the lighthouses and earlier today when I came home from work I attempted to use a certain vr social game as a good test, I got the same results with all the vr unplugged from the wall and pc.

Sadly to no avail, I have still retained the issue, the only good thing is that it has not happend on most of the normal games I play, shame MMO's are still causing the issue sometimes.

I did look at that but the Power(dbmv) on all my DS bonded channels are between 0-1.1db (only channel 26 being 1.1 and second highest being channel 22 at 0.9db)

Hey LiamRC, thank you for reaching out and a warm welcome to the community I am sorry to hear this is happening.

I have taken a look at our side and I can't see nothing that should be causing this problem,

What type of VR headset do you have, is a Meta, PS5 one etc? Thanks

New around here?

He already said it's a 2018 HTC Vive.

His Hub 5 is crashing. Given it's owned by VMO2 I would say that's an issue on VMO2's side. 😊

Hi Matthew,

I have a HTC Vive gen 2 from 2018, it is a pc based headset using steam vr.

I do know it is not caused by the headset as I have tried it different rooms and it also worked fine in my previous home (less than 2 months ago) and in my neighbours apartment. Also this does happen outside of vr on more social games which can be played on vr and on desktop (mouse and keyboard).
