Ping times to Lord of the Rings online servers

My ping times to the Lotro servers have recently gone from around 95 - 100 ms to around 135 ms.

Looking at a trace-route it seems that there's been a jump in the time it takes to get to the US. Is hop 8 to Washington?

7 * * * Request timed out

8 115 ms 115 ms 117 ms us-was03a-rd1-ae-102-0.aorta.net

9 122 ms 121 ms 121 ms us-nyc01b-ri2-ae-8-0.aorta.net

If so, why am I being routed to the West coast of the US to get to the East coast?

It used to look like this

7 88 ms 89 ms 87 ms us-nyc01b-rd2-ae9-0.aorta.net
8 87 ms 101 ms 92 ms us-nyc01b-ri2-ae3-0.aorta.net

Anyone else seeing this?

Is that server at step 8 in Washington? And if so, why am I being routed to the US West coast to get to the East coast?

Re: Ping times to Lord of the Rings online servers

Hello

Can you please post the whole tracert.

The way the internet works is it is like a huge mesh, routing is dynamic and works and on the idea of what is the quickest route, now it could be that the route you was taking is down or very busy hence why a different route.

Once it leaves the virgimedia network it is outside of what virginmedia can do.

You may find that the problem with the route you had has now resolved itself.

Re: Ping times to Lord of the Rings Online servers

Hello

Looked at it a bit more and that is the backbone of the internet, registered to Liberty Global. I do believe it is in Washington State.

@davidnutter I have merged your two threads into one.  Not sure why you got a rejected message as it clearly did post.  If you encounter this rejected message again a screenshot of it might help track down the cause.

Re: Ping times to Lord of the Rings Online servers

Thank you. I've no idea why it was rejected. I posted, got a message about it waiting approval, came back later and it wasn't showing so checked pending messages and it was listed under Rejected.

Anyway, the situation has still not changed and I'm still being routed through Washington.

Re: Ping times to Lord of the Rings Online servers

I suspect the server is in Washington DC and not the state of Washington.

The servers are named after cities like lon, ams, nyc, so 'was' will be the city of Washington rather than the state which is likely to be named 'sea'/Seattle.

The pings you used to get are exceptionally good for a DOCSIS/cable connection, in my experience 100-120ms is normal for US East Coast, and 150ms+ for West Coast.
