OVER UTILISATION

I have been getting really bad latency on games, as a result of shockingly low download speeds, for about 6 months now. I am on a wired connection and from around 4pm onwards I rarely get over 5mbps. This is clearly an over utilisation issue and I get the feeling Virgin Media thinks that this isn't an issue worth fixing. This is really not good enough for the 'Number 1' UK broadband provider. I hope one day very soon, somebody at VM realises they need to actually give their customers the speeds they are paying for.

Probably why they aren't the UK's No.1 Broadband Provider..... and No.1 for what?

Anyway, sure they will fix it when everybody goes back to school and work 😂

If I've helped please let me know 🙂 Matt

Re: OVER UTILISATION

I was meaning No.1 as in the high speeds that they advertise (whether you get them or not is a different story) but I don't know how much longer I can cope with the horrible speeds. I imagine it will go back to normal when, like you said, everyone is back at work and school but that probably won't be for a while. I was really just posting so I could vent my frustration somewhere but, you never know, they might listen.

Re: OVER UTILISATION

Yeah those awards are bs...

I totally understand and your right to do so, if stuff goes unsaid it don't ever get thought about or action-ed upon.

As for the speeds returning to normal, there will definitely be improvement when people start living again but as you say, life isn't going back to normal for a long time if it ever does....

I think a lot of people will be moved out of the office and to the home office after restrictions lift, peoples habits will remain changed so might not be many people heading out on the town as there used to be, the way the internet is used has changed in the past year and its not going to just go back to what it was,

Virgin needs to catch the hell up, these utilization issue have been problems forever and unless Virgin moves fast to newer technology and doesn't keep half arsing things they won't ever catchup.

My advice for you as a gamer is ditch Virgin and get yourself with another provider, the issues your facing aren't going anywhere soon and cable broadband sucks for latency anyway specially on the hubs supplied across the world these days.

If I've helped please let me know 🙂 Matt

Re: OVER UTILISATION

You may well have an over-utilisation problem, and/or a noise or power issue.  Chances of utilisation being actively fixed by network changes are very small indeed, noise and power problems are usually an easy fix.  Even in an area that's suffering over-utilisation, to be constrained to 5 Mbps download is very unusual, so before jumping to any conclusions, you should post the hub's status data (as text, not screenshots) for Downstream, Upstream and Network log here and we can check those out, and set up a BQM and post a link to shared live graph as well.

Maybe it is purely over-utilisation, but let's see if there is anything that can be improved.

Re: OVER UTILISATION

I suspect you're right about the over-utilisation, I'm thinking there's possibly the addition of a noise or power problem.  If there is, that can be fixed and speed hopefully improve, and then it's "only" the tedious wait for Covid to go home and traffic levels to come down and enable decent latency.
