I play online gaming,  since upgrading to 1gig I seem to have a moderate nat type! I've tried everything on line and my last resort is contacting virgin. Is there anything else I can try

I doubt if it's anything to do with VM.

Have to looked at www.Portforward.com

It has lots of information and covers some of the VM Hubs.

In my experience (several teens playing online) on a VM connection, setting static ip on gaming rig and opening the required ports works wonders.

I think, havent looked, that Portfoward has an application that will open the ports for you.

Setting a static ip is easy and there is plenty of info online on how to do that.

Thank you for making this post regarding the moderate NAT type you have, that is not ideal. I'm sorry for any impact this has made on your gaming.

Which consoles are you using for gaming?

These are the steps to fix modernate NAT type on an Xbox One just in case you are using an Xbox One:

    Navigate to your router login page.
    Log in to your router using the required credentials.
    Navigate to the UPnP menu on your router.

    Enable UPnP.
    Save your changes.
    Open the Settings app on your Xbox One.
    Select the Network tab.
    Select the Test NAT type tile.
