Latency spikes, packet loss, & jitter - via direct ethernet connection [NN5] [Overwatch] [BQM]

Hello there,

Like others on this forum, I have observed (& felt!) major lag spikes, jitter, and packet loss over the last few months. This is especially noticeable during online games like Overwatch. My (gaming) PC connects directly to my router via ethernet cable. I have a 200Mbps broadband-only package. Below are several solutions I have tried:

  • Went through Virgin Media tech help phone line and got a new Superhub 3 a couple of months back - same issue persists
  • Switched ethernet cables - no difference (note that my networking setup has not changed since the problems began)
  • Regular restarts and resets of router - it makes no difference

Here is a link to my live BQM graph:

Re: Latency spikes, packet loss, & jitter - via direct ethernet connection [NN5] [Overwatch] [BQM]

Thank you for the post BennyUK7 and welcome to our community.

Have you already run through a pin hole reset of the Hub? If you could please do this and check the wiring for any visible damage then let us know how this is once it's back online.

Is there also another ethernet cable you could try to ensure it's not a cable issue?

Thank you, Emily.

Re: Latency spikes, packet loss, & jitter - via direct ethernet connection [NN5] [Overwatch] [BQM]

Hi there,

Thanks for your reply. I've done a couple of resets since getting the new Superhub - the problem persists. The latest one was a week ago. I have tried with different ethernet cables between my router and PC (one Cat5e and one Cat6) but the issue remained.

Apart from the new router, my networking setup hasn't changed since the issues began. I used to get sub-30ms ping on Overwatch when connecting to EU servers in Paris and Amsterdam using the same cable and computer. Blizzard support advised it was an issue with my ISP - Virgin in this case.

Thank you for confirming.

Could you please run a wired speed tests and show us the results?

It may also help to post your Hub network logs in your Hub's advanced settings, please just remove any IP and MAC addresses when you copy and paste this to the thread.

Thanks, Emily.

Sure, here is a speed test link:

I redacted the MAC address in the table below:

Thank you for the information, we just need this run through speedtest.net if possible?

Thank you, Emily.

The results of that speed test look to be over the 200Mbps connection you're subscribed to at the moment.

Is this dropping in certain times of the day at all?

Thanks, Emily.

Re: Latency spikes, packet loss, & jitter - via direct ethernet connection [NN5] [Overwatch] [BQM]

Hi again,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly today. The issues I'm facing are not to do with either connection speed (download/upload) or the connection dropping out. Connection speed is as advertised and I am not experiencing drop outs.

However...

I am experiencing severe lag spikes, jitter, and packet loss, which is noticeable during online games, at times making them unplayable. This can be seen by looking at the constant, large yellow spikes at the BQM graph here along with the red lines descending from the top.

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/share/2ffd6fe85326ddf69df8ca6888518e2cc5f70452

I am looking for help to get my ping back to normal with minimal variance, jitter, and no packet loss! I used to have consistent, low ping for online games to match the great download speeds, but not anymore. Further help on this specifically (not connection speed/drop outs) would be most appreciated!
