Lag Spikes While Gaming

CSMacDonald
Dialled in

I have been gaming online via wifi for a long time and never had any issues until 2-3 days ago. I've now started getting massive lag spikes, rubber banding, even being dropped from servers because ping has gone so high. I have no idea why it has suddenly changed after being fine for years.

The router is in the room below the PC, about 5m away.

Internet browsing and other internet usage is absolutely fine, getting speeds of around 75-100mbps, but when I play games online now it is unplayable.

It's become a very frustrating problem, can anyone advise?

Hi CSMacDonald,

Thanks for posting on our community forums. Sorry to hear that you've recently started to experience lagging when online gaming. We can certainly understand the frustration caused, especially as you have had no issues before.

Remotely looking from our end, we have checked the systems and there it is showing that one device may be to close and would improve using a wired connection.

As you posted a couple of days ago, how have things been? Has there been any improvement?

We have included a link here https://virg.in/wifisos for further help and assistance.

Kind regards Jodi.

Hi Jodi,

Thank you for responding.

Same issues with the wifi connection and gaming (not browsing or anything else). As I said, speed still really good via wifi for browsing.

I connected via an ethernet cable and the gaming issue was resolved. However, ideally I don't want to run a 20m cable through the house.

I am connecting the router from the living room downstairs to a room directly above it, the PC and router are only about 5m-10m apart, but the layout of the house means a cable has to snake around to get there. I didn't know a device could be too close to the router.

I've been advised to try a wifi scanning app, so I will give that a go and see if it improves the situation.

Thank you for getting back to us @CSMacDonald.

I can see you recently commented on another post to which our team gave a great response. Have you been able to try the great response given? Do you need any further help?

Thanks,
