Game Lag, Stream Lag , Packet Loss

For the past 5-6 months I've been getting high packet loss + 5000ish dropped frames an hour on my streams, First thought it was because I was using a TP link and not a Ethernet cord straight to my PC, after upgrading to ethernet straight from my router to my PC, it made my speeds quicker, but the lag and packet loss was still there. I've done everything to try sort this out, virgin sent me out a new router about a week ago which I thought was the issue but turns out its made it just as bad, or even worse. I'm doing a Broadband quality monitor test now, so will post the results tomorrow.

Re: Game Lag, Stream Lag , Packet Loss

Gazing into my crystal ball I'll tell you what the future holds:

The BQM will show a typical over-utilisation pattern, meaning more traffic than VM's local network can handle. You can choose to believe whether this is Covid related, or whether VM simply sell contracts until (and indeed after) the local network is at capacity, but the outcome is the same for now.

Nothing you can do to improve matters. In some areas VM do indeed undertake work to rejig the local networks to balance loads and eliminate over-utilisation. But sometimes/often that's either not possible, or judged uneconomic if there's a need to spend money on more equipment. And sadly VM won't ever admit the truth, so there might be a fault reference and a "fix date", but there's no way of knowing if that fix date is actually backed by an actual plan of action and programme of works. Quite often it seems not, and as the fix date approaches it is simply moved a month or two ahead. Your options:

1) Sit it out, and hope that VM do carry out improvement works. There's little or nothing you can do to force VM to upgrade the network, nor to be honest about the outlook.  All the working from home and video calling is not helping here, and is worse for VM than Openreach because the technology VM uses has a hard 1:10 upload limit..

2) Get yourself a new ISP. If you're in a fixed term contract you'll probably have to use the VM complaints process (and almost certainly escalate for arbitration at CISAS ) to be released from contract without penalty. If you need to do this, the grounds of your complaint is the poor performance, and your request fro release from contract without penalty is twofold: First the Consumer Rights Act 2015 that requires any consumer service to be provided with "reasonable skill and care", and second, the Ofcom Fairness Commitments, that states Customers’ services work as promised, reliably over time. If things go wrong providers give a prompt response to fix problems and take appropriate action to help their customers, which may include providing compensation where relevant. If providers can’t fix problems with core services they have promised to deliver within a reasonable period, customers can walk away from their contract with no penalty. holds:

Of course, I could be wrong and your BQM may show other matters.

Thank you for your reply!

I think I'm just gonna end up changing ISP, gonna keep the deal we have now for my mum and sister and then see if I can get a second one for a lil bit cheaper every month just for me

Re: Game Lag, Stream Lag , Packet Loss

Mixing ISPs can be a good strategy.  Don't overdo the speed of the additional ISP if it is primarily gaming and occasional household backup for other users, 35 Mbps should be ample, and consider the smaller, customer service focused ISPs like AAISP, Aquiss, CIX, IDNet, uno or Zen Internet.  Not only are they better at getting any Openreach problems sorted, but they operate excellent UK based support, and they offer 12 month contracts.  If you join Sky you'll be locked into an 18 month contract and enjoy the same low grade offshore support as VM.

Re: Game Lag, Stream Lag , Packet Loss

@Ayresie I will eat my words, and I'm Very Sorry Mr Virginmeeja, I jumped to a conclusion.

Although there's a bit of peak demand profiling, it is nowhere near the levels I was expecting, and it may have nothing to do with network congestion, but be down to the niggling packet loss that shows up on the BQM.  This might be something that can be easily fixed.

Connect to the hub by clicking on this link http://192.168.0.1/  That should pull up the log in page for the hub.  But don't log in, just click on the link "Check router status"  That'll bring up a window with five tabs.  Open the Downstream tab.  Select all the text (Ctrl-A if using a keyboard), copy it (Ctrl-C), then paste it (Ctrl-V) into a reply here.  Don't use screenshots.  Post that, do the same for the Upstream and Network log.  You'll get an error message when you post the Network log, just click on "post" a second time.

Whereas the image that @unhappygamer527 tried to post did show the three headed beast of over-utilisation.
