Another Latency Post

Ok, so I've been called here from someone on twitter who's told me to do a BQM which I've done for the last 5 days....

I'm sick of playing Warzone and the constant lag is beyond a joke now. Upload and download speeds are great, I love them but the latency terrible... I can't even get through to the technical team on the phone....

Here's my BQM for the last few days... https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/share/511df0a3d2e64c9d1af847df6fb2d718ea...

Now I'm no expert here but them graphs clearly show certain times of the day are absolutely dreadful for ping and latency, my best guess is because of clear over-subscription and usage in the area (would I be right with that?)

Latest network logs here too

I'm at he end of my tether now, my biggest passion is gaming online with my friends and it's basically just making impossible to do so.

For reference I'm on 350mbs service, paying over £80 a month!! This is TOTALLY unacceptable for that money.

What are my options guys? Someone from Virgin please give me some insight into this, it's beyond a joke now.

Re: Another Latency Post

Sadly, your thoughts are correct.

From my stock reply:The BQM shows a typical over-utilisation pattern - you see how it's very poor during normal waking hours, and then peachy from about half past midnight to 9 am? Shows that the network and your hub are working perfectly when there isn't too much traffic. You can choose to believe whether this is Covid related, or whether VM simply sell contracts until (and indeed after) the local network is at capacity, but the outcome is the same for now.

Nothing you can do to improve matters. In some areas VM do indeed undertake work to rejig the local networks to balance loads and eliminate over-utilisation. But sometimes that's either not possible, or judged uneconomic if there's a need to spend money on more equipment. And sadly VM won't ever admit the truth, so there may be a fault reference and a "fix date", but there's no way of knowing if that fix date is actually backed by an actual plan of action and programme of works. Quite often it seems not, and as the fix date approaches it is simply moved a month or two ahead. Both forum staff and telephone agents don't have any visibility to whether real plans for a fix exist, not whether there's a history of previous fix dates.

Your options:

1) Sit it out, and hope that either VM do carry out improvement works, or that the problem is Covid related and soon goes away.

2) Get yourself a new ISP. If you're in a fixed term contract you'll probably have to use the VM complaints process (and arbitration at CISAS if need be) to try and be released from contract without penalty.  But if you go down new ISP route, make sure you speak to a competent ISP (AAISP, uno, Aquiss, IDNet, CIX, Zen Internet) to establish your expected speed and whether there's any existing contention (over-utilisation) issues on the Openreach network around you.

Re: Another Latency Post

My question is why should over-utilisation happen in the first place when VM should be QoS their links and routers my BQM was fine but is now showing a bit a spikes not as bad as what you got but enough to lag in a game.

Re: Another Latency Post

same for me. im on 350mb.

downloads are perfect.

warzone has constant packet burst. even when my ping is low its warping me around. sometimes my ping is 350+. done a BQM and it looks horrific.

i cancelled tv last year and now i'm on rolling 30day. i'm gonna try zen internet. my pal uses them and his connection is great even though its 65mb.

been with virgin since it was blueyonder. back when i had the best gaming connection around even though it was only 512kb

my advice would be get a BQM set up with think broadband. get some evidence and use that to cancel your contract. yours will probably looks something like this

Re: Another Latency Post

If you don't mind waiting a bit longer for game updates to download, then honestly? If you can get more than 20Mbps over ADSL/VDSL, you'll be laughing.

I've heard really good things about Zen if you're not interested in having a TV package.
