Blue light on superhub continually flashing

The blue light on my superhub is continually flashing even when all wireless devices in the house are turned off. Is this normal?

There's lot's of "blue lights" on all 3 SuperHub models?

If you're referring to 2.4 and/or 5GHz indicators then these will still flash when Hub's Wifi/Radio is left enabled even when there's no active user connection because W/Lan 802.11 has to send "beacon frames" in order for any 802.11 device to start to attempt to join. Google "Wifi beacon" for further info.

Think of it perhaps as a "light house" - it will always flash even when no ship is nearby or all sea going traffic is over the horizon?

If you're referring to the "Traffic indicator"(up/down arrow) then this similarly is not just recording user data from any user ethernet (or w/lan) IP traffic but also DOCSIS "management" data for the CableModem part of the Hub in order to continually "tune" via RF component on the wire(HFC connection) back to the CMTS(server). Approx every 20-35 secs the CM and CMTS will regularly perform a major handshake (Station Maintenance) to ensure/adjust timings RF levels and other gory stuff to confirm they can both talk to each other with optimal clarity.

Think of it perhaps as every house might see the postman at regular times but not always will he need to deliver post to your door?  (and if your "Posty" is anything like mine, then occasionally you have to return mis-directed post! :face_with_tongue: )

hth

Re: Blue light on superhub continually flashing

Thanks. Not sure which superhub it is but its less than a year old and has 3 lights the top onen8fvwhich is blue and continually flashes. Your explanation makes sense to me, I was concerned that someone else was connecting to it. Sorry, I'm a complete technophobe !

No apologies necessary what-so-ever! From your description it's the original SuperHub1 (VMDG480 on the tally label on the side?) and as Tony has kindly posted and the toplight is the Traffic indicator (up/down arrow).

When it's blue it's correctly locked onto DOCSIS3 (bonded channels) and if it ever goes green(apart from a short period when it's initialising/rebooting) then you're usually suffering from a line impairment and consequently from partial/degraded service.

You may have only had the SH1 for a year but it's actually now EOL after 6years and superseded by improved performance/reliability/wireless range of SH2(VMDG485) and recent SH2AC(VMDG490).

VM still refurbish these SH1's and allocate to basic new customer entry tiers as well as "like4like" repair replacements in the field.

They work perfectly well in ModemMode and alternatively if you get adequate Wifi and/or Cabled performance for your specific speed tier then  "if it ain't broke - don't   fix it"

Eventually (I'd guess within the next 1-3 yrs) new infrastructure upgrades that are currently rolling out will require yet another 1 or 2 new Hub variants at least and the SH1 will then likely be replaced as and when by SH2/AC f.o.c. in piecemeal fashion, much like the legacy DOCSIS1/2 CableModems were (and still are).
