Has the account been deleted ?
That is very possible I'm afraid and because you are no longer a VM customer VM staff will be unable to help you.
90days after you close your Virgin Media Broadband account VM normally delete all the email accounts linked to it. That's explained in point 3 of this link https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-how-to-cancel
In fact though, as you have found, these accounts often seem to linger on for years before VM get round to deleting them and when they do they never seem to give any warning.
You could try resetting the password from here https://my.virginmedia.com/forgot-details/password by entering your VM address as your username and following the prompts. I have my doubts that will work but if you do regain access to your account you will need to assume it could disappear at any time.
If you are accessing the email account directly from the VM website you could try accessing it via an email app or client such as this one https://www.thunderbird.net/en-GB/ . Here is a helpsheet on how to set it up https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-mail-update-settings-mozilla-thunderbird
However, again, even if that works it will only be a very temporary respite.
You need to bite the bullet and set up a new non ISP email account. You can set up a new Gmail email account from here https://support.google.com/mail/answer/56256?hl=en or a Microsoft outlook.com account from here https://outlook.live.com/owa/ (Other free accounts are available but they are the market leaders.)
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. 😧
