incoming emails randomly going to archive folder

I am running Outlook 2016 on my pc. Emails I knew had been sent to me did not appear in the inbox. I eventually checked other folders and found the missing messages in the archive folder. The missing messages are quite random in content. About 1 in 10 messages.that should have appeared in the inbox were there.

Autoarchive setting is off. I use imap and messages are synched to a laptop, pc and android phone.

Any suggestions?

Just a few ideas:

  1. Do you have any filters set up in either your VM Webmail account or in Outlook? One of them could inadvertently be responsible for moving certain emails.
  2. The content of the affected emails may be random but what about the senders? Is it only emails from a certain sender or senders affected?
  3. If those affected emails are from one or more of your online accounts (Amazon, eBay or Facebook for example) it could indicate that your VM email account has been compromised. The hacker could be moving these emails from view to hide their activities from you. That has happened with other VM email accounts in the past.

Finally, when you say "Autoarchive setting is off." you are obviously referring to Outlook's archive setting. AFAIK VM Webmail does not have an auto archive  facility, you have to initiate the archive process manually, by physically selecting a folder or an individual email and clicking on the Archive button.

It sounds as if you usually manage your VM emails with Outlook so unless you are  regularly accessing your VM webmail account that points towards something in Outlook archiving those emails.

As I say, just a few ideas and thoughts.

Thank you for this useful response.
I have not cured the problem but understand the email setup a bit better.
Can you explain how imap folders work. I have 3 devices and webmail. Does an alteration in  folder names on one device automatically get copied on all my devices? All devices now seem to sync correctly for the inbox but I am having problems with "sent" folders as these coordinate on one device but not on the others. Similarly with Archive folders. That is to say that mail sent via outlook on one device appears on some but not all devices. It is possible that I have the hierarchy of the folders incorrectly set but I thought the arrangement of the folders on the web view would over rule the arrangement on the other devices. It seems not.
I am being very careful as I don't want to lose a load of emails.
Any comments or suggestions welcome or advice where to look to properly understand imap management.
