can't download emails to laptop, but can send them, no problems with webmail

Since Wednesday 9th June I have had an email problem whose origin must be with ViginMedia.

I can read and send my NTL emails via the VirginMedia website

And using my Pegasus email program on Windows laptops I can send NTL emails.

But I can't download my emails to the laptops..

I have been using the Pegasus program for 26 years.

The problem is not specific to this computer as another computer has the same issue.

Therefore the fault is with VirginMedia

Here is the program log

15:08:06.061: --- 9 Jun 2021, 15:08:06.061 ---
15:08:06.061: Connect to 'pop3.ntlworld.com', timeout 120 seconds.
15:08:07.098: >> +OK Virgin Media server ready.
15:08:07.098: << USER recent:[hidden]
15:08:07.113: >> +OK
<< 0017 PASS XXXXXXXXXX
15:08:09.474: >> -ERR [AUTH] Authentication failed.

The problem is with the settings you are using.

The recommended settings can be found here: https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Email/Email-settings-change/td-p/3369438/jump-to/first-unread-m...

Also, due to a change within the last week, you need to remove the 'recent' prefix from the username field.  This prefix has been redundant since 2015 and until this week was automatically ignored by the servers.

Great! Fixed. It was the "recent" prefix removal that did. Thankyou very much.:-) - Chris

Make sure you update your server settings as well.

The recommended settings are as follows

Incoming:

pop3.virginmedia.com
Port 995 SSL/TLS
Username is your FULL ntlworld email address

Outgoing

smtp.virginmedia.com
Port465 SSL/TLS

Authentication - Enabled (On Apple devices this should show as Authentication type Password)
Username and password is the same as incoming.

Change them now and you will be future proofed should Virgin Media ultimately retire the legacy servers altogether.

Well I discovered that myself today, shame no one at Virgin thought to ask when I called them as to why it stopped working, yet web access was fine?
My mail broke today (was fine yesterday?) and trial and error found removing the recent got my email back. 😞
