This is a new one on me! I left Virgin Media about 10 years ago but somehow retained my blueyonder.co.uk email address as they never terminated/disconnected it. No idea why.
That email address has now been hacked and whoever has hacked it now has compete access to all my emails. You'd think a simple password change would resolve that right... no not the case.
Because I am no longer a Virgin customer/account holder I cannot log in or register to change my email account password. I have been on with the call center twice (chat and call) and they tell me there is absolutely no way that it can be done. No way to change my password and protect my account!!!! They both told me that email address does not exist but it clearly does as I am getting emails to this day - I also double checked the connection servers and they are clearly Virgin Media (imap.virginmedia.com and smtp.virginmedia.com). So it definitely DOES exist.
So my email account remains in the hands of the hackers with my hands tied. I will add that both the agents on chat and call were very poor and offered no assistance at all even after I explained the situation and gave the connection details! That lady did not even know the contact email/number for the Virgin Media data protection team
So I am now in complete limbo with an email account I have no control over.
As a result of this my social media accounts have now also been hacked (I can see the 2 step verification emails into that blueyonder.co.uk account have been read!) as they have complete access to my email account.
My next set is to go down the legal route as (given Virgin Media are the data controllers here) they have a responsibility to secure my data. I have done the right thing by reporting the data breach to Virgin Media but if they cannot allow me to reset my password to protect the data they hold, that to me is a breach of the data protection act and they will be liable. In addition, I have asked them (on chat and the call) to terminate/suspend that email account but they say they cannot so that either. So this email account will just trundle on without any ability to protect it.
I have created a new email account (obviously not with Virgin Media) and updated all the accounts that I know of to use the new one but I just have no idea what else these hackers are getting from all my historic emails!!
All very stressful and worrying!
