I've read a few topics on this and I found a solution that has worked for me.

I couldn't access my main account email box but I sign in to my virgin media.  I have several email accounts setup but my primary one wasn't working.  

I changed my Virgin Media password.
I changed my login email address for virgin media to an email address not hosted by VM.
I changed my contact email address to a 3rd party email address.

I then went into mailbox app password management:

Account Settings > Account Details 
Scroll to the bottom for Mailbox App password management.  Click Manage.

Generate a new password.  Use this password in your mail application, such as Outlook, Thunderbird etc.  You will also need this on any smart device setup to access your emails.

I did find in the beginning I couldn't access my emails via the web. After this step I could.

What a headache!  The worst thing is getting to talk to anyone in VM is awful.

One thing I've done is set the email account (via the web) to auto forward all emails to a 3rd party mailbox.
