I switched from VM to Sky as my ISP a couple of months ago and now I can't access my @ntlworld.com email account., is this because VM have cut off my access without telling me or is it likely I just need to upgrade my password?

Sadly what @BenMcr has advised is correct 

The email will have been deleted now as its been a couple of months 

We could raise this with our IT Team to allow access for a short while

But with no Active services , it will be declined 

Sorry this is not the answer you are looking for

Cancelling at the end of your contract
If you decide to leave us after your minimum fixed term contract period, you'll just need to give us 30 days' notice.

When you cancel your services, you’ll have access to your Virgin Media Mail account for 90 days, before we close it. This should be enough time to save any contacts, emails and files.

If it's not yet been 90 days you may still be able to get support to get access to it in order to switch to another mail provider.
