I have been a virgin subscriber for nearly 10 years now. I have used Virgin Gadget Rescue a few times and they have been useful. I have never paid for this and assumed it was part of my package. I required assistance with something today and they starting banging on about a subscription? Has there been a change of policy or something?

Gadget rescue is a paid for additional service that is meant to support VM customers' own hardware or software rather than problems with equipment or services provided directly by VM.
The earliest Forum Post that I can find right now concerning Gadget Rescue charging for their services dates back to 2017 but I have also included a couple from 2020. I think you have been very lucky not to have been charged in the past.
As you can see,these people were definitely not happy at being charged for what seems like very poor service.and there have been many other similar posts over the years.
In fact it is remarkable that you are the first person I have heard who has a good word to say about Gadget Rescue.
