Unable to select, all messages in this folder.

In my in box in the All drop down box, the All messages in this folder is not highlighted. 

All the others are highlighted and click able.

Thanks for the info.

I used to be able to select all messages. When my emails were getting high I would check/ tick them all, then deselect the ones I wanted to keep.

Can't find the option to do that now.

You are correct, there was a Select All option, and though no reason for its removal has been stated it is likely because it only ever selected all cached  emails, i.e. those recently viewed in the folder. For instance, if you had 5,000 emails in a folder the initial view of the folder cached the first 50 emails then Select All would only select 50 emails and not the 5,000 actually contained the folder.

If you must use Virgin Media's email service then do consider using an email client (like Thunderbird) to overcome webmail's many shortcomings.
