Thunderbird not downloading email from Blueyonder server

I've tried changing to the recommended setting (changed from pop2.blueyonder.co.uk to pop2.virginmedia.com) but that doesn't work either. Can use webmail directly but need to work via Thunderbird.

Uploading SMTP is still working fine.

Thanks.

Re: Thunderbird not downloading email from Blueyonder server

Please follow the instruction here Outgoing Authentication Issues? - Check Email Logs to obtain logs in Thunderbird; do make sure to amend tbirdlog.bat, at line 11, from set NSPR_LOG_MODULES=SMTP:5 to set NSPR_LOG_MODULES=POP3:5

Review the logs output and post here any VM error codes found; be aware posting more than the requested information may reveal information considered personal.

Re: Thunderbird not downloading email from Blueyonder server

I think I did that OK. I created the .bat file, made the suggested change (changed SMTP to POP3), saved it in Desktop, ran it. This duly produced tbirdlog folder containing tbird.log . Sadly this .log file was empty.

It's as though Thunderbird just isn't asking the server to download. But in the server settings, the default : "Check for new messages at startup" is checked.

Maybe I need to re-install Thunderbird but I am frightened to do that as I certainly don't want to lose my email history (and I don't know where that is, anyway.

Thanks for your help so far

Select ☰ > Activity Manager , does it show any download(ed) messages?

Re: Thunderbird not downloading email from Blueyonder server

No, nothing is showing in Activity Manager.

I sent out a test email, which worked, but this wasn't mentioned in Activity Manager, either

Re: Thunderbird not downloading email from Blueyonder server

Your settings for T-Bird should look like this – please double-check

4. Update POP3 Server Settings to:

  • Server Name: pop3.virginmedia.com

  • User Name: Your full email address e.g. your address@blueyonder.co.uk

  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS

  • Authentication: Normal password

  • Port: 995

7. Update smtp Settings to:

  • Server Name: smtp.virginmedia.com

  • Connection security: SSL/TLS

  • Authentication method: Normal password

  • User Name: Your full email address e.g. your address@blueyonder.co.uk

  • Port: 465

The fact that you can send emails suggests that the smtp settings are OK.

The fact that you can’t get new incoming messages suggests that your POP3 settings are wrong.

What happens when you click on “Get Messages” top left?

Does anything get recorded in the log file when you do this?

Re: Thunderbird not downloading email from Blueyonder server

Bingo! I clicked Get Messages - got asked for my password. Entered that, and promptly got all the last 2 weeks or so of emails. And Activity Manager reflects that.

For the record, yes, I do have the POP3 details as they should now be. Am reluctant to change the smpt details while they are working.

So, nothing to see heere unless the problem recurs. Many thanks for all your help. Mike.

Good to see you're now up and running.

For future reference, should you ever need to reinstall Thunderbird:-

When you install Thunderbird it creates a profile called "default". This profile will be used automatically unless you invoke the Profile Manager and create a new profile.

Profile files are stored separately from the Thunderbird program files. You can uninstall Thunderbird without losing your messages and settings, and if something goes wrong with Thunderbird your information will still be available.

Thunderbird stores your profile folder in this location on your computer, by default:
C:\Users\<your Windows login username>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\
where "<xxxxxxxx>" is eight digits randomly generated by Thunderbird and "<default>" is the name you assigned to the profile.

All you need to know about backing up and restoring Thunderbird profiles is here:- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#thunderbird:win7:tb...
