Re: Ipad/Iphone SMTP why deleting and recreating an account DOESN'T fix it.

Hi - I have the same issue on all of my devices.  I've resorted to using the webmail client only. I have a mac as well as Iphone/ ipad and Mail on the mac has the same issue.  I've run Connection Doctor and viewed the logs for SMTP and all seems fin, however it does the SMTP connection without authentication?

but I still get the following error when I try to send an outbound email

The sender address ***@blueyonder.co.uk was rejected by the server smtp.virginmedia.com.

The server response was: Authentication Required (VM401)

I have supplied a password.  Should I start a new thread?  Thanks

Re: Ipad/Iphone SMTP why deleting and recreating an account DOESN'T fix it.

Oops - I set authentication to manual and enabled pwd as the method.  I now see more in the logs including the dreaded VM305:

READ Dec 02 16:45:39.350 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelTLSv1_2] -- host:smtp.virginmedia.com -- port:465 -- socket:0x6000033d2940 -- thread:0x600000cde380
525 5.7.13 Authentication Denied (VM305)

I guess this means spam has been sent from my account?

Re: VM305 - spambot

Not exactly.  It implies that you have a spambot somewhere on your network that is busily sending out spam.  There is a suggested route to finding the problem here: https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Security-matters/Searching-for-Spambots-on-your-network/m-p/408...

Common culprits noted on the site so far are amazon firesticks with additional apps added, smart tvs.  Also implicated are systems set up to use the Hola Free vpn, which is not a vpn but a method of sharing your network with others.
