Re: Problem with outlook

Hi Guys

My host server guy said that he has several clients on the same server, using VM as their ISP, and they do not have the same problem.  He still thinks its a Virgin problem.  I don't know who to believe, I just want it sorted.  He has suggested changing hosts to see what happens.  He is coming to us next week to check other things out (not sure what).

Re: Problem with outlook

Wait for Tim to reply. What it tells me is that "mail.cablecomb.com" exists and that your ESP is not blocking my IP to either of the two mail servers you cited. And because both trace routes leave the VM system successfully VM aren't doing anything - as is the case with your trace routes. But there may be something happening here that Tim is best placed to discern. But whatever it is,  it is happening outside the VM network (I believe and hedging my bets).

Re: Problem with outlook

@janniz

Let's deal with this logically.  Dealing with the original server first - we'll deal with the second one separately.

Why I do a tracert.

tracert server name does two things:

  1. Does a DNS lookup and thus allows me to see the IPv4 (OR in some cases) IPv6 address returned.
  2. Traces a route to the server by sending a packet to the IP address increasing the hop count - starting at 1 and increasing until the server IP is returned.

It's not foolproof as in some cases the destination blocks ping/udp responses meaning the tracert appears to fail.  However this is why I always run a comparison myself.  As well as using tools such as OpenSSL to test that the server is up and running.

In the case of 1, Virgin Media has been known to intercept and change DNS lookups as part of it's Virus Safe/Child safe system.  This can have the effect of inadvertently blocking connections to anything other than web servers.

However your result agrees with both mine and Howard's and clearly shows that this is not happening.  If it were, you wouldn't be seeing the correct IP address from the lookup.  Note:  I am actually using my own recursive DNS server, I'm not even using BT's  So I'm 100% confident that the result I have is correct.

In the case of 2 - Both Howard and myself can trace full routes to the server IP.  YOU on the other hand get stopped 1 hop before.  We have seen this time and again, and this has always been down to blocking by the mail provider NOT Virgin Media.  The fact that other Virgin Media customers don'e have this problem would again confirm that this is a block of your specific PUBLIC IPv4 address by the mail provider.

That the second DNS lookup is not working properly for you would lead me to ask if there have been any changes made to that domain recently.  Certainly it's working for both me and Howard, and again we can both trace to the server.  Howard from a VM connection and me from a BT one.

Tim

Re: Problem with outlook

Consider trying the following:

  • open a command shell / terminal
  • enter the following command: telnet mail.cablecomb.com 993

Press Ctrl + ] and then Ctrl + D to exit telnet
  • enter the following command: telnet mail.csi.co.uk 993

Press Ctrl + ] and then Ctrl + D to exit telnet

Were the telnet connections successfully established; if not what message was shown?

FYI: both were successful when I tried indicating that: (a) a server is listen on port 993; (b) accepted connection from a Virgin Media IP address address.

'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

There has not been any changes to that domain as far as I know.
