Problem setting up Outlook 2019

Hi All,

My laptop crashed earlier this week. I managed to save my files, reset the laptop to its original factory settings and restore the original files, but lost my MS Office software. I therefore bought Office 2019 (Professional). Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc all seem present and correct, but I'm unable to use Outlook. Whenever I start it, the software immediately starts searching for my e mail address (I don't have to click "Start" > select "File" > "Account settings" etc), but always comes up with the message "Something went wrong", no matter whether I try automatic set up or "Advanced options (Let me set up my account manually)"

Microsoft support suggests the problem is due to the autodiscover process...

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/something-went-wrong-and-outlook-couldn-t-set-up-your-acc...

How do I go about "contacting my web server provider ... of your domain website and make sure that the web server is not responding to Autodiscover requests"?

Many thanks if anybody can assist!

Re: Problem setting up Outlook 2019

Try setting up your account manually by following the instructions here:
https://www.dummies.com/software/microsoft-office/outlook/whats-new-in-outlook-2019/

Note the section under  . . . But Trickier Advanced Account Setup where you have to use the Repair option to gain access to the mail server settings.

Mail server settings are as noted below:-

  • User Name: Your full email address e.g. Richard.Branson@ntlworld.com
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: Normal password
  • Port: 995

Or

IMAP Access (Incoming)

  • Server Name: imap.virginmedia.com
  • User Name: Your full email address e.g. Richard.Branson@ntlworld.com
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication method: Normal password
  • Port: 993

Outgoing Server (SMTP)

  • Server Name: smtp.virginmedia.com
  • Connection security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication method: Normal password
  • User Name: Your full email address e.g. Richard.Branson@ntlworld.com
  • Port: 465

If you are on W10, can you gain access to the settings via Control Panel>>Mail (Microsoft Outlook 2019), then 'Email Accounts' button?

MS makes the Outlook setup process more hideous and complicated with each new version!

Re: Problem setting up Outlook 2019

Hi Sololobo,

Thanks for trying to help...

I'd already tried manually setting those values. I just get this message: -

Something went wrong and Outlook couldn't set up your account. Please try again. If the problem continues, contact your email administrator,,,

Hi Goslow,

Thanks for trying to help...

Yes, I'm on Windows 10, but couldn't see Outlook 2019 via the control Panel

The closest I can get is Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features>Microsoft Office Professional 2019 - en - us

Re: Problem setting up Outlook 2019

Do you have webmail access to your email account using your current username and password?

Re: Problem setting up Outlook 2019

Yes, I can get access to my emails via the Virginmedia site.

I'd just like to link that email account with Outlook!

Re: Problem setting up Outlook 2019

Access to webmail just confirms that the password you are using is correct.

Your password may be out of sync with VM's backend systems. Try changing your email password in MyVirginmedia (to the same one if you prefer) to see if you can force a resync of your password.

If you change your password to something new remember to make the change in Outlook as well.

This may not work in which case VM will have to reset/unlock your email account for you.

The entry in control panel is for 'Mail' not Outlook. I am on Outlook 2016 and get the image below

Could be a different setup on 2019 I guess.

Re: Problem setting up Outlook 2019

Here's an confusing one, Goslow...

I did a search for "mail" from the Control Panel, and up came the result "Mail (Microsoft Outlook 2016) (32-bit)

I'm not sure how that happened - how come the 2019 version isn't noted?!?
