Outlook 365 not syncing with smtp for outgoing emails

I have tried all the recommended remedies including all of this to no avail. I have also changed and reinput my email password. Any ideas anyone?:

To update your IMAP Server settings:

  1. Open Outlook
  2. Select File
  3. Select Account Settings
  4. Select Account Settings again
  5. Select the Virgin Media Mail account you wish to change
  6. Select Change
  7. You’ll see your current server settings
  8. Update the mail servers addresses to:
    • Incoming mail server: imap.virginmedia.com
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.virginmedia.com
    • User Name: Your full email address e.g. Richard.Branson@ntlworld.com
  9. Select More Settings
  10. Select the Outgoing Server tab
  11. Make sure My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is ticked
  12. Make sure Use same settings as my incoming mail server is ticked
  13. Select the Advanced tab
  14. Update the Incoming server (IMAP) settings to:
    • Port: 993
    • In Use the following type of encrypted connection select SSL / TLS
  15. Update the Outgoing server (SMTP) settings to:
    • Port: 465
    • In Use the following type of encrypted connection select SSL / TLS
  16. Click OK
  17. To test your settings, select Automatically test account settings when Next is clicked
  18. Click Next

Re: Outlook 365 not syncing with smtp for outgoing emails

Hi phorn, thanks for posting and welcome to our community.

I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with syncing with smtp for outgoing mails.  Can I ask if you've tried this with a 3rd party email address?  If so do you have the same, if any issues?

Regards

Re: Outlook 365 not syncing with smtp for outgoing emails

Hello

Can you please do the following

"Open a terminal and enter the following command after replacing jane.doe@virginmedia.com with your own email address:

curl -v -url "smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com" --user jane.doe@virginmedia.com

and when prompted enter your password.

If you successful authenticated yourself to the SMTP server you will see something similar to:

< 235 2.7.0 ... authentication succeeded
> HELP
< 214-2.0.0 This is cmsmtp ESMTP service help
214-2.0.0 This is cmsmtp ESMTP service help
< 214-2.0.0 To contact postmaster send email to postmaster@virginmedia.com.
214-2.0.0 To contact postmaster send email to postmaster@virginmedia.com.
< 214-2.0.0 For local information send email to Postmaster at your site.
214-2.0.0 For local information send email to Postmaster at your site.
< 214 2.0.0 end of HELP info
214 2.0.0 end of HELP info
* Connection #0 to host smtp.virginmedia.com left intact

however if not you will see:

< 535 5.7.8 Authentication Credentials Invalid (VM300)
* Closing connection 0
curl: (67) Login denied
What VM code do you see; in the example above it is VM300? Please do not be tempted to post more than the requested curl output as you will likely reveal your email address and password."

Can you please just post the error code which should be in the format VMxxx.

Regards Mike

Hi phorn, it does look like you're in very good hands.  Please can you follow the advice of @DJ_Shadow1966 if you've not already resolved your issue?

Regards

Lee

Re: Outlook 365 not syncing with smtp for outgoing emails

Thanks Lee_R.

It seems to have resolved itself and may have something to do with recurrent Virgin e-mail issues when not on its own webmail - which I often have when trying to e-mail using my phone.

I didn't understand your suggestion though

Thanks phorn

Re: Outlook 365 not syncing with smtp for outgoing emails

Thanks Mike,

The issue has resolved itself - but I'll keep your recommendation if it happens again (although I won't know if I'll be able to follow it until I try).

Out of 10 I'm probably only 4 or 5 on the IT front.

Thanks again

Re: Outlook 365 not syncing with smtp for outgoing emails

Sorry, i wanted to know if the issue was exclusive to your Virgin Media issued email address or if the issue impacted 3rd party email addresses, such as gmail, hotmail etc.

Regards

Lee

Re: Outlook 365 not syncing with smtp for outgoing emails

Ah.

Well, my gmail account was ok initially, although now that my Virgin account has fixed itself I now get a repeated request for my gmail password which only stops if I open that account.

I think I'd better change my gmail password. I recently bought Office (Home 365) as I will soon need Excel and Word at home for work - I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth persevering with Outlook though. If I get more glitches I think I'll go back to Virgin's interface for that account and Microsoft for gmail.

Thanks, phorn
