Outlook 2007 has stopped sending

Up until a couple of weeks ago my outlook 2007 client was working fine - then it stopped sending and started popping up the ID and password box every time.  It has now stopped doing that but still will not send mail   The settings are:

pop3.virginmedia.com port 995

smtp.virginmedia.com port 465

As per the settings page.
Logging is enabled and the output file reads as follows:

2020.09.20 22:03:07 POP3 (pop3.virginmedia.com): End execution
2020.09.20 22:03:07 [REMOVED]: ReportStatus: RSF_COMPLETED, hr = 0x00000000

Can anyone please advise why it should have started doing this??   The message in the send/receive dialogue box suggests the smtp sever is not authenticating the send request....

Thanks, Neil.

Re: Outlook 2007 has stopped sending

Not a good idea to leave your email address in plain sight for world+dog to see, scrape and sell on to spammers! I've sent a message to the mods to hopefully remove it before too many people find it but probably not until the morning.

In the meantime, the first question to ask is are you still a current VM broadband subscriber and/or if you are, have you had a break in service in the last couple of years and used another ISP?

Outlook 2007 has not been supported since 2017, but do you have any other devices you use to access email, do they show the same behaviour?

Just an observation from those logs but they seem to suggest your settings are not as per  the Virgin Media settings page. https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Email/Email-settings-change/td-p/3369438

The lines "Port: 465, Secure: TLS, SPA: yes" is saying that you have Secure Password Authentication turned on.

In your Outlook Outgoing Server settings, the box "Require log on using Secure Password Auhenication (SPA)"  should be unticked and the box "My outgoing SMTP server requires authentication" should ticked.

It would be worth checking your settings again. 😉

Re: Outlook 2007 has stopped sending

My apologies for not scrubbing the email addresses - teach me to do things late at night.

The part where it says that the user terminated the send operation was where I shut down Outlook to be able to access the log files.

This is the settings page - SPA is actually off:
SMTP_Error_1.jpg

This is the message I get returned when trying to send via my virgin.net account.

SMTP_Error_2.jpg

It has stopped popping up the dialogue box for username and password now which is a blessing but keeps telling me as above the request is timing out.

To answer the other questions:
* I have been a Virgin customer since day 1 of Virgin Media without a break.
* I am using Outlook 2007 because I have been out of work since 2007 and do not have the money to spare to upgrade (ever tried getting a job in IT if you are over 50 years old??)  Only reason I moved from Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 to Windows 10 was because Microsoft offered a free upgrade to get old customers onto the new systems
* Outlook is the only mail client I have available for the same reason above.

Thanks for coming back.

The settings screens in later versions of Outlook are slightly different to yours but the basics are the same.

If you click on the "More Settings" button, bottom right of your screen shot. You will then open up a second smaller screen. Click on "Outgoing Server" along the top and you will see this:

SPA settings.png
Is SPA unticked there as well?

By the way you say"I am using Outlook 2007 because I have been out of work since 2007 and do not have the money to spare to upgrade". Don't overlook the free alternatives in the email client market.  Mozilla Thunderbird is excellent and there has just been a new version released, eMClient and Mailbird are two others that get good reviews plus lots more.

Re: Outlook 2007 has stopped sending

Yes - I confirm that SPA is unchecked there as well.

Thanks very much for the info on the alternate mail clients - I will have a look at them.  Ideally I need one that will handle PSX files as I have a LOT of hobby related mails that I use as reference materials.

Re: Outlook 2007 has stopped sending

In advanced settings make sure you have the encryption type set correctly.

Outlook 2013 and earlier incorrectly labelled their settings.

SSL = Implicit SSL/TLS - this is the setting you want if using port 465
TLS = StartTLS

Tim

Edit just send an email using smtp.virginmedia.com and here's what my log file shows for the connection:

2020.09.23 02:44:11 SMTP (smtp.virginmedia.com): Port: 465, Secure: SSL, SPA: no

Compare this to the OP's

2020.09.20 22:04:57 SMTP (smtp.virginmedia.com): Port: 465, Secure: TLS, SPA: yes

Which confirms that the OP's advanced page is set incorrectly.

Re: Outlook 2007 has stopped sending

I rechecked the setting - everything looks as it should.
I am still getting this error message back whenever I try sending from my virgin.net account:

Virgin Media send error.jpg

And this is the log file from that period

:09:50 <address removed>: UploadItems: 1 messages to send
2020.09.25 02:09:50 SMTP (smtp.virginmedia.com): Begin execution
2020.09.25 02:09:50 SMTP (smtp.virginmedia.com): Port: 465, Secure: TLS, SPA: no
2020.09.25 02:09:50 SMTP (smtp.virginmedia.com): Finding host
2020.09.25 02:09:50 SMTP (smtp.virginmedia.com): Connecting to host
2020.09.25 02:09:50 SMTP (smtp.virginmedia.com): Connected to host
2020.09.25 02:11:43 SMTP (smtp.virginmedia.com): End execution
2020.09.25 02:11:43 <address removed>: ReportStatus: RSF_COMPLETED, hr = 0x8004210b

The system WAS working and had been for a considerable period of time.  Nothing was changed at my end and yet I suddenly start getting this problem??

That shows your settings are still not quite as they should be and that you have encryption type (or encryption method)  set to "StartTLS".

If you look back at Tim's (Ravenstar68) post and his advice about encryption type you will see that you should have it set to "SSL/TLS"
