Outgoing Email Marked As Spam - False Positive

pjflip
Tuning in

I am trying to send an email from my ntlworld account with a link to my own website.  This is not being sent with the message:

[SMTP]Cannot send message (Email body not accepted due to the following reason:
"5.7.0 SPAM Content Found (VM603) DUMKnf4q69Za5DUMKnJJVl
")

Any ideas how to fix this?

Just a heads up for you. A quick check here https://mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx does indeed show that domain has been blacklisted by Spamhaus.

Not sure if Virgin Media check against that Domain Block List but listing on it is totally automated and most listings will expire automatically after they cease to appear in spam.

Here's a link that tells you about it https://www.spamhaus.org

Frequent updates to the data used by spam filters is likely to be responsible for this and will hopefully clear itself in 6, 12, or 24 hours. Should the problem persist then post back here and wait for the forum team to respond; be aware it can take them a few hours / days to respond.

Thanks for your thoughts.  I had seen your comments previously on a similar post.  I have tried sending the e-mail several times over the course of a couple of days - always with the same result.  I am able to send the e-mail using my gmail account, so this is definitely an issue with VM and outgoing mail spam filtering.

What I can't find is any mention of outgoing mail spam filtering on the VM website, or even any reason why there should be any.  I can understand incoming mail spam filtering, but outgoing?

I would welcome a response from the forum team.

I am not a VM employee but while you are waiting.................

In fact most responsible email providers  make checks on outgoing email from their users. They do that to ensure that their (the email provider's) outgoing IP addresses do not get a bad reputation for sending spam and end up on a email block list (often referred to as a "blacklist")

If the IP address of one VM's outgoing mail servers gets on to such a blocklist it might result in VM emails being rejected completely by receiving email services and at the very least it would mean that VM emails would be much more likely to end up in the recipient's spam folder.

Those checks include limiting the number of emails that can be sent from an account as well as running outgoing mail through a spam filter.

Here's a link which outlines how Microsoft support those checks for organisations using MS Exchange Online Mailboxes.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/security/office-365-security/outbound-spam-controls?v...

VM almost certainly will have similar processes in place but are probably less willing to talk about them in any great detail. 😉

Hello pjflip

Sorry to hear of the problems sending emails, we appreciate the frustration this can cause and you taking the time to both raise it via the forums and follow the steps and advice offered by the community VIP's. Welcome to the community.

As coenoby has advised there are spam filters in place for outgoing mail, this is to ensure no accounts are being used for the purpose of sending spam as outlined in their reply. The error message you posted in your original post, is that one that has been received after trying send an email?

Do you get this on emails you try to send or just to specific accounts? Are you able to send messages without the link included to your website?

Rob

Hi Rob

The error message refers to an email I sent to myself with the link included.  I have no issues sending other emails from my ntlworld account, nor sending the problematic email from my gmail account.  I've tried other addresses, but every email I send with the link to my website fails as spam.

Thank you for that clarification. Would you be able to provide the link you're trying to send in a response on here?

coenoby, thanks very much for the info.  I do hope that Virgin Media are able to whitelist my specific subdomain (tabscore.infinityfreeapp.com), as this is very inconvenient for me.
